The reason why Weston Sawmill’s sawmill waste collection service has proved so successful is the number of relationships we have established with joinery firms all over the country. Our premises are based in Staffordshire, but our service stretches as far south as Portsmouth, Southampton and Hampshire plus spots in Cornwall and Dover. Chopping Away at the Competition One of our long-standing clients is Chipmunk South West Bulk, based in Taunton in the south-west of England. Having been in business for over 35 years, Chipmunk specialises in manufacturing high-quality wood-based products such as animal and cubicle bedding, riding and turnout surfaces plus biomass fuel and horticulture products for the peat manufacturing trade. P.H Winterton’s tipper units are 140 cubic yards, making them similar to walking bulk trays and able to carry a large amount of sawmill waste from sites. For smaller joinery outfits, we offer a 20-foot open-top waste skip for off-cuts, wood chips, pallets and general waste. We get calls from joineries all the time and bring one of our tipper units to their site to be filled and then returned to us for biomass fuel and animal bedding. P.H Winterton is always looking to become more environmentally friendly, which is the reason all of our vehicles are tracked to reduce fuel consumption, where possible. We are also actively looking at ways to reduce or plastic and energy use in all operations. Why We Use Sawmill Waste for Biomass Fuel All of the timber we use for biomass fuel is A-grade, meaning it has no contaminants; making it very popular for heating chicken houses plus heating buildings and warehouses and drying products such as timber. Read Moreabout Sawmill Waste Collection with Joineries EverywhereWith winter well on the way, finding ways to protect your flock from the elements can be challenging – especially for smallholders who don’t farm poultry on a larger scale. One of the most innovative ways to keep your chickens warm is by heating the chicken houses with P.H Winterton’s brand of biomass fuel. We offer two grades of biomass fuel, P16 grade and P35 grade, with the only difference being the size of wood chips used to create the fuel. In our latest blog, we are also going to share some handy tips you can use to complement using our biomass fuel. Happy Chickens will Keep Laying Eggs It’s true that chickens are hardy birds and if they aren’t warm enough, they will stop producing eggs, with weaker members of the flock becoming sick; which can be harder to recover from in colder weather. Here is some advice to ensure your birds are protected from the colder weather – Minimise Drafts – Wind chill can increase heat loss from your coop, and if it is more than five years old there are chances that parts have started to rot and will need repairing. The cheapest way to repair holes is to use cut-to-measure plywood over holes. Keep Coop Well Ventilated – You shouldn’t have any large holes in the coop, as this will reduce airflow too much. This could lead to serious issues such as ammonia build-up. Placing vents towards to the top of the coop, as this will vent out the warm, moisture-laden air and replace it with cooler, drier air that keeps humidity down and prevent mould from growing in the chicken bedding. Your mesh vent should have a hatch that you are able to open and close that will properly vent the coop during the day and close it up in the evenings when it’s colder – especially during heavy rain. Frostbite Protection – During cold months and freak weather, breeds with large combs and wattles are more susceptible to frostbite. Give your chickens extra protection by covering their combs and wattles in petroleum jelly that keeps off the worst of the cold. Find out more about Biomass Fuel P.H Winterton and Son are part...
Read Moreabout How to Keep Your Chickens Warm this WinterBiomass fuel has become increasingly popular with households aiming to reduce their carbon footprint and save money on their energy bills. Here at P.H Winterton and Son, we develop a high-quality supply of wood chip biomass fuel that can provide warmth to a single room or even power a central heating system plus hot water boilers. According to the Energy Saving Trust using a wood-fuelled biomass boiler could save you an incredible £960 a year compared to an older electric heating system. Three Reasons to Use Biomass Fuel Here are three reasons to use a biomass heating system – 1. The price of wood varies considerably but long term this is a more affordable heating solution. 2. Using a wood boiler system could lead to financial support from the Government-led Renewable Heating Incentive (RHI) scheme. 3. Carbon dioxide emitted from wood pellets when they are burning is the same amount absorbed over all the time the plant was growing. Sourcing your fuel from a local supplier such as P.H Winterton and Son will ensure carbon emissions are kept as low as possible plus they are still much lower than from fossil fuels. Biomass Fuel Saves the Environment Carbon dioxide emissions are significantly reduced when using a wood-fuelled boiler instead of solid coal-fired system. According to the Energy Saving Trust, this can add up to an incredible 14.3 tonnes of emissions per year! P.H Winterton and Son are also part of the UK government’s approved Biomass Supplier List, which was introduced by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) in April 2014. This is a comprehensive list of wood fuel that’s been proven to meet requirements of the Renewable Heat Incentive scheme. This allows RHI participants to demonstrate to Ofgem that the fuel they are using in their biomass boilers meets the RHI sustainability criteria required to claim savings as part of the scheme.
